The Craft
Craft is not only what happens by hand
At Technowood, craftsmanship begins much earlier than sanding, shaping or finishing. It begins with understanding the timber.
Wood is a natural material. Even two pieces from the same species can behave differently. Grain direction, moisture content, density, knots and internal stress can all affect the finished product.
The maker’s role is not to force every piece of wood into behaving identically. It is to understand those differences and work with them carefully.
Seasoning the wood
Freshly cut timber contains moisture. If it is shaped into a finished product too early, it may bend, crack, shrink or develop joint problems later.
This is why seasoning is a fundamental part of our process.
Technowood has an in-house kiln-seasoning system, allowing us to manage the drying process more closely before the wood enters production.
Kiln seasoning helps reduce excess moisture in a controlled environment. The temperature, airflow and drying period must be managed according to the species, thickness and condition of the timber.
It is a slow and largely invisible stage, but it influences nearly everything that follows.
Reading the grain
Before cutting begins, the wood is studied.
The grain direction helps determine how each component should be positioned. A board with attractive grain may be selected for a visible surface, while another section may be better suited for structural strength.
This stage requires judgement. Natural marks are evaluated rather than automatically removed. Some add character; others may affect performance and need to be avoided.
Shaping and machining
Once seasoned and selected, the timber is cut and shaped.
Depending on the product, this may involve precision machinery, routing, drilling, joinery and detailed handwork. Machinery helps maintain accuracy, but it does not replace the judgement of the maker.
Edges, openings, joints and surfaces are checked throughout the process—not only after the product is complete.
Sanding and finishing
Sanding is where the object begins to feel finished in the hand.
Surfaces are gradually refined, edges are softened and touchpoints are checked carefully. The goal is not to erase the identity of the wood, but to make the product comfortable and ready for everyday use.
The finishing system is selected according to the product and its intended application. Kitchen products, furniture and decorative objects may each require different treatment.
Final inspection
Before packing, every product is checked for stability, surface quality, finishing, proportions and visible defects.
Natural grain variation is expected. Poor workmanship is not.
