FAQ

FAQ

Wood is a natural material, and buying a handcrafted wooden product can bring up a few questions. Will the colour match the photograph exactly? Can a cutting board develop knife marks? What happens if the wood comes into contact with water? How should the product be maintained? We have answered the most common questions below so that you know what to expect before placing an order and after bringing a Technowood product home.

Most Technowood products are made primarily from solid wood. The exact material and construction may differ depending on the product.

We currently work with woods such as:

  • Mango wood
  • Teak wood
  • Jackwood
  • Palmwood
  • Mahogany wood

The material used for each product will be mentioned on its individual product page.

Some products may also include cane, metal, fabric, hardware, adhesives or other supporting materials where required by the design.

Yes. Seasoning is an important part of our production process. Technowood has an in-house kiln-seasoning system that allows us to manage the moisture-reduction process before the timber enters production. Proper seasoning improves dimensional stability and helps reduce the possibility of excessive warping, cracking or movement. However, solid wood remains a natural material. It can still respond slightly to changes in humidity, temperature, water exposure and storage conditions throughout its life.
The overall design, proportions, construction and intended finish will remain consistent. However, the grain pattern, colour variation, natural streaks and small markings will be different in every piece. No two sections of a tree are identical. This means the product you receive will have its own natural character. These variations are not printing errors or manufacturing defects. They are part of working with real wood
Product photographs can look different depending on: Screen brightness Display settings Lighting conditions Camera exposure Natural grain variation The age and finish of the wood We make every effort to represent the product accurately, but slight differences in tone should be expected. Wood may also deepen, lighten or become warmer in appearance as it ages.
Not necessarily. Small knots, mineral streaks, colour shifts and variations in grain are natural characteristics of timber. We inspect every product before dispatch and avoid material conditions that may significantly affect function or structural performance. Natural features that do not compromise use are generally considered part of the product’s character rather than defects.

Cutting boards and kitchen products

Our cutting boards are intended for normal kitchen preparation and are finished using materials selected for the product’s intended use.

The specific wood and finish used will be mentioned on the product page wherever applicable.

Before first use, wash the board gently and allow it to dry completely.

As with any food-preparation surface, hygiene depends on how the product is cleaned, dried, stored and maintained.

Yes. A cutting board can be cleaned with mild soap and water.

However, it should not be soaked or left inside a wet sink.

Wash it soon after use, wipe away excess water and allow both surfaces to dry with sufficient airflow.

Do not store the board while it is damp.

No.

Dishwashers expose wood to prolonged heat, moisture and strong detergents. This can dry the surface, weaken the finish and increase the chance of warping or cracking.

Hand washing is recommended.

Yes.

A cutting board is a working surface, so knife marks will gradually develop with use.

These marks are normal and become part of the board’s story. They do not automatically indicate poor quality.

Deep grooves should be cleaned carefully. A heavily worn board may eventually require sanding, refinishing or replacement.

A reversible board may be used on both working surfaces unless the product page states otherwise.

Alternating between the two surfaces can distribute wear more evenly.

After washing, allow air to reach both sides during drying.

A wooden board can be used for different food-preparation tasks when cleaned correctly.

However, many households prefer to keep separate boards for raw meat and ready-to-eat ingredients to reduce cross-contamination.

Always wash the surface promptly after preparing raw ingredients and allow it to dry fully.

There is no fixed schedule.

Re-oiling may be useful when the surface begins to:

  • Look unusually pale
  • Feel dry or rough
  • Absorb water more quickly
  • Lose the richness of its finish

Use only an appropriate food-safe wood oil for products that come into contact with food.
